Intent 

Through our DT curriculum, we aim to enable children to become autonomous and creative problem-solvers, both as individuals and as part of a team. By engaging in design and technology, children will learn how to think and plan in a logical sequence to overcome problems and make products that solve real and relevant issues within a variety of contexts. Our curriculum design is underpinned by the research, design, make and evaluate cycle, which features in all areas of DT teaching. Children will begin to develop a critical understanding of its uses, effectiveness and impact on daily life and the wider world. Children will create and design projects for a variety of purposes and contexts. Children will be able to consider safety and take appropriate risks using specialist tools, materials, mechanisms and equipment. Children will understand the process of planning, refining and modifying whilst considering key design criteria. 

Implementation

Teachers in all year groups use the DT Progression Map as well as the DT Whole School Overview to create exciting yet relevant lessons. In all year groups, teachers plan DT ensuring that the 4 strands for KS1 and 5 strands for KS2 are covered within two years. DT is taught in all classes from EYFS to Y6, allowing many opportunities for cross-curricular learning. Children will complete a DT project three times in the year (once per term). These sessions might be blocked but are normally taught weekly. Children’s DT books are used to log their research, design, make and evaluate processes. In Reception and Year 1, there is a class book to document the process. From Year 2 onwards, children have their own books.

Impact 

Through DT, children will develop the expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and participate successfully in an increasingly technological world. Children at Walton Oak will develop their knowledge, and learn the techniques and skills needed to design and make high-quality prototypes and products. They will also learn how to critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products, as well as the work of others.

They will also understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook. Children will investigate how knowledge from other topics (Science, History, Maths etc) can be applied in real life DT contexts. Assessment of learning in Design Technology is an ongoing monitoring of children's understanding, knowledge and skills throughout lessons by the class teacher, supported by children's contributions to discussions and teacher questioning. Children will answer research questions, complete various designs, and take photos of their final work to stick into their books, including annotations on their designs and evaluations.
