Year 3 Rabbits at the Mini Olympics Competition (13/03/2020)
The next 'Mini Olympics' competition for children in Years 3 and 4 took place on Friday 13th March at Cleves School, Weybridge. These competitions are being run by Cleves every half term, giving an opportunity to all the other local schools to bring an entire class to each event to participate in a range of different races.
Cleves, Walton Oak, Burhill, Holy Family, Cardinal Newman and Grovelands all participated in the competition and there were seven races that the children could participate in: basketball dribble, hockey dribble, tennis race, rugby pass, obstacle race, hurdles race and a relay running race.
Each race had to have 10 children involved in it (5 girls and 5 boys) and every child had to complete the activity as quickly and accurately as possible. The teams were awarded a first place, second place, third place and so on for each race they completed.
The entire class had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon of sport. Every child who participated in the event will receive their certificate in their Celebration Assembly shortly. Well done to every one who took part!
Year 5 & 6 Cobham R.F.C. Core Values Tag Rugby Tournament (13/03/2020)
On Friday 13th March, Walton Oak took both a Year 3 & 4 and a Year 5 team to the Cobham R.F.C. Core Values Tag Rugby Festival, held at Cobham Rugby Football Club grounds. Organised by Active Surrey, this event allowed our school to involve another 23 children in competitive sport. Seven schools were involved in both the Year 3 & 4 and Year 5 events: Lyne & Longcross, Royal Kent, Long Ditton St. Mary’s, Claygate, Thames Ditton and St. Anne’s all participated on the day.
The matches were arranged in a round-robin style and each match lasted 10 minutes one way. This tournament was supposed to be aimed at semi-sporty children or children who were not in their schools ‘A’ team for tag rugby.
Both our teams had a tough but enjoyable afternoon of tag rugby. Both our #PurpleArmy teams played beautifully within the Rugby Core Values and were a complete credit to Walton Oak. Every single one of them will receive a medal and a certificate, which will be presented to them in Celebration Assembly, next week. Very well done to both our tag rugby teams.
Year 3 & 4 WWHSP Sportshall Athletics Competition (06/03/2020)
Every year there is a District Year 5 and 6 Sportshall Athletics competition that takes place around January/February time. This event sees children compete in a variety of indoor running races, throwing and jumping events. Our Year 5 and 6 children absolutely love this competition, but unfortunately there is still no District Sportshall Athletics event for Year 3 and 4 children to participate in.
As part of the newly formed Walton, Weybridge and Hersham Sports Partnership, Walton Oak helped to organise our very own Sportshall Athletics competition for children in Year 3 and 4 from all the local schools to participate in. It was held at Cleves School on Friday 6th March and this competition saw children participate in a range of athletics events such as: standing long jump, 5 strides, vertical jump, chest push, speed bounce, javelin throw, relay races, obstacle relays and sprint races.
Thanks to the Year 6 Cleves Sports Leaders helping to measure and time the races, each school was able to bring a girls and boys team, allowing each school to give up to 30 children the opportunity to represent their school in a competitive sports fixture. The children had a fantastic time and were all able to participate in various running, jumping and throwing events throughout the afternoon.
We must congratulate every member of our team on their wonderful performance on the day. It was a fantastic all-round team effort and every member played a vital part. Congratulations to Burhill for winning the event. We must say a very big thank you to Cleves for hosting and organising the event and to Mrs Braden and Miss Johnston for looking after the #PurpleArmy.
Year 5 & 6 WWHSP Sportshall Athletics Competition (12/02/2020)
Walton Oak entered the very first Walton, Weybridge and Hersham Sports Partnership (WWHSP) run Sportshall Athletics competition, held at Cleves School, Weybridge on Wednesday 12th February.
This competition saw 6 schools (Ashley, Burhill, Cleves, Walton Oak, St James' and Grovelands) go head to head in a range of athletics events such as: standing long jump, standing triple jump, vertical jump, chest push, speed bounce, javelin throw, relay races, obstacle relays and sprint races. It was aimed at Year 5 and 6 pupils who did not participate in the annual ERPSSA Sportshall Athletics event held in December. The event gave another 23 children the opportunity to represent the #PurpleArmy in a competitive sports event.
We must congratulate all of our runners, jumpers and throwers on their effort and determination during their events - everyone was superb! We must say well done to St James' on winning the competition and thank you to Cleves for organising and hosting the competition for us all to enjoy! A very big well done to the entire team!
Year 5 & 6 WWHSP Handball Tournament - Champions! (03/02/2020)
Walton Oak took part in the very first ever Year 5 and 6 Handball Tournament on Monday 3rd February, which was held at Cleves School, Weybridge. Four local primary schools (Burhill, St James’, Cleves and Walton Oak) competed to win the new Handball trophy. This event was kindly organised and hosted by Cleves, as part of the newly formed Walton, Weybridge and Hersham Sports Partnership (WWHSP).
The format saw us playing to ‘Mini Handball’ rules and every school got to play each other in a round-robin style. The children had to have four outfield players and one goalkeeper in each game and had to throw and catch the ball between their team with the aim of scoring a goal by throwing the ball into the net. Think football, but obviously only using hands (and no running with the ball!).
At the end of the event, Walton Oak had won three and drawn two games, which resulted in the #PurpleArmy winning the tournament! Well done to the whole team on their effort and performance. We must say a very big thank you to Cleves for kindly organising and hosting this event for us all to participate in. It was a wonderful afternoon of handball and our children thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.
Year 4 Muntjacs participate in the Mini Olympics (31/01/2020)
The fourth Mini Olympics event of this academic year took place on Friday 31st January at Cleves School, Weybridge. These competitions are being run by Cleves every half term, giving an opportunity to all the other local schools to bring an entire class to each event to participate in a range of different races.
Cleves, Walton Oak, Burhill, Cardinal Newman, Manorcroft and Grovelands all took part in the event and there were seven races that the children could participate in: basketball dribble, hockey dribble, tennis race, rugby pass, obstacle race, hurdles race and a relay running race.
Every child who participated in the event will receive their certificate in our Celebration Assembly next week. Well done to every one who took part!
Year 3 & 4 and Year 5 & 6 WWHSP Dodgeball Tournament (21/01/2020)
On Tuesday 21st January, we took a squad of Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 children to participate in a dodgeball tournament held at Cleves School, Weybridge. This tournament arranged by the newly formed Walton, Weybridge and Hersham, Sports Partnership (WWHSP), a collection of local schools dedicated to providing competitive sporting events for their pupils. Although our Year 3 and 4 children play dodgeball as a House Sport here at Walton Oak, there is currently no District tournament for them to take part in. We took two Year 3 and 4 teams and two Year 5 and 6 teams, allowing 28 children the opportunity to represent their school against Cleves, Ashley, Burhill and St. James’ in competitive dodgeball matches.
The basic rules of dodgeball are as follows: each team of 6 players on court must throw small, soft balls at the other team, hitting them on the body, below the head. If an entire team is out, this is called a wipe-out and 10 points are awarded to the winning team. All games are 2 minutes long and each team plays in a round-robin style. During this tournament, each team had to play all the other ten teams in the competition.
All four of our teams had a wonderful time and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon of dodgeball. Walton Oak did not win either competition on this occasion, however our Year 5 & 6 ‘A’ team did finish in joint second place in the ‘Spirit of the Games’ awards, which recognises how well teams did in terms of their honesty, enthusiasm and sportsmanship. Well done to all our children on their enthusiasm and competitiveness during the games.
We must say thank you to Cleves School for organising and hosting the event for us all to attend. We also need to say thank you to Mrs Kakar, Mr Page and Miss Johnston for attending the event and looking after the #PurpleArmy.
