Surrey School Games 2019 - County Orienteering Silver Medalists!
The Surrey School Games County Finals took place at St. George's College, Addlestone on Thursday 11th July. We took our Year 6 Orienteering team there to compete against six other schools from all around Surrey.
Our Year 6 children completed a unit of work in orienteering in December 2018 and had considerable experience of using maps to find control points around a course. These Year 6 children in particular loved the work that they did in those lessons, hence they were invited to participate in the County Finals. This event saw each school bring six pairs of children, six boys and six girls, to the event and each pair had to find 24 control points scattered around the St George's College Campus. Ravenscote, Ongar Place, Brookwood, Surrey Hills, SEND Church of England and Charlwood School all participated alongside Walton Oak in the competition.
Each pair of children was given a short time to look at the map, discuss a strategy as to which control points they went to and in which order, then they were off, using a staggered start. The aim was to firstly find all 24 control points and write down the letters on those control points correctly. The second aim was to complete this course in the quickest time possible. The average time for completion of this course was 40 minutes.
Once all the pairs from every school were back safely at the start zone, the times were calculated and the positions were decided. There were first, second, third and fourth place certificates awarded in the best individual pairs and there were gold, silver and bronze medals for the the best overall teams. Our very own pairing of Lily-Grace and Poppy managed to complete all 24 control points correctly in 26 minutes and 41 seconds, placing them in third place out of 42 pairs! David and Ivan also managed to complete all 24 points in 29 minutes and 25 seconds to finish in fourth place overall!
The results of the team event were read out last. Medals were given to the schools whose team completed the all the control points correctly in the quickest time possible, when added together. Out of the seven schools that took part in the event, the whole Walton Oak team got all 24 control points correct and managed it second fastest, earning the team the silver medal for their efforts! This was a brilliant and well earned achievement for our children and our school. We are so incredibly proud of our #PurpleArmy and their achievements in this County Orienteering Final - very well done to the entire team.
