PE

Intent

At Walton Oak, Physical Education (PE) is an integral part of our curriculum and we strive to create a culture which aims to inspire an active generation to enjoy and achieve in PE. Our belief is that PE, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and lead a healthy life. We intend to deliver high quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in developing essential life skills. We want to teach children vital skills that will keep them safe, such as swimming. We also strive to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life long values. Our PE curriculum aims to improve and celebrate the wellbeing, fitness and sporting achievements of all children at Walton Oak, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning of values and disciplines PE promotes.

Implementation

PE at Walton Oak provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, net & wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor & adventure. The long term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met. Pupils participate in two high quality PE lessons each week, covering two sporting disciplines every half term. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities. Children also have the opportunity to attend after school clubs. Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area and across Lumen Learning Trust Schools. These events develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children, as well as encouraging physical development and improving wellbeing. Each year a small group of Year 6 children are invited to become Sports Leaders for the school. They develop into sporting role models for the younger children, assisting with weekly lessons, our annual Sports Day and any other sporting activities. Children in Year 5 swim once a week for 10 weeks.

Impact

The children complete each key stage with a high proficiency in each aspect of PE. Children are aware of the link between physical activity and good mental health and understand its significance as part of a healthy lifestyle. We ensure that our PE curriculum is progressive and allows children to develop fundamental skills and apply them to a variety of sports and activities. All children are provided with the skills and given opportunities to demonstrate improvement in order to achieve their personal best. Our pupils are physically active and this has positive implications on their learning in the classroom. Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of exercise. All pupils understand the values and importance of fair play and being a good sportsperson. We strive for all children to enjoy PE and develop a love of sport, and physical activity, that they can pursue outside of school and in their future life.

House Sport & Sports Leaders

Every child in Year 6 at Walton Oak is invited to apply for the position of Sports Leader.  To do this, each child must write a letter of application and provide a reference from a referee who is not their parent.  Once a child has applied they will be given a list of PE and Sport related tasks that they must complete, and provide evidence of.  There is no limit to the number of children who can become a Sports Leader, as long as the tasks have been completed well and the child's conduct and behaviour in class and around school is befitting of the role of Sports Leader.

Once a pupil has been successfully appointed, they will receive a Sports Leader badge.  A new set of tasks will then be issued to Sports Leaders in January each year to complete throughout the rest of the academic year.  These tasks will hopefully provide a perfect balance of leadership opportunities, personal challenge and improving children’s knowledge and understanding of PE and Sport.

House Sports Trophy

Walton Oak gives its pupil's the opportunity to participate in House sports competitions throughout the academic year.  Children represent their House in sports such as football, hockey, dodgeball, rounders and cricket.  The aim is to get as many children, boys or girls of any ability, to take part and gain points for their House, which when added together, will result in the winning house being presented with the House Sports trophy at the end of the academic year.
